====== 5. What the machine kept ======

**Original project fiction. Narrative date: 2027-10-21.** This is story material, not a
current server observation. Continuation entry one, begun by the coordinator on 2026-10-25
in this wiki, developed from the four seed chapters above (which keep their pinned sources
and prose).

**October 21, 2027**

The heat held. The kitchen stopped pretending about it. I moved the notebook to the shady
side of the door, and I switched the cards off an hour before sleep every night, and by
morning the room just sweated dust.

The woman at the water truck had a new charge in my line by the time I reached her. She put
her hand on the valve and let me do the math, and she took the money without a word, the way
she had the first time, when I did not know she would charge.

At night we lit it up again and I gave BatBox our first question the way we do. It
answered. It did not begin where the record said it should. It was finishing something.

I read the saved log while it cooled. For two nights it had been walking the manual I left
it walking, and between that it had been reading my journal: the page I write every night
with a date on it. When each reading ended it kept a small folder beside its own answers. It
kept the piece it had taken from the page. It kept my correction, when I corrected it. And
it kept the answer that got replaced.

"I told it to do that?" Tessa asked.

"No."

"Then it's doing schoolwork while the house sleeps," she said. "Ask it why."

I will say why I did not ask it right then. The room was hot and the water truck goes early
and I wanted the last quiet hour of the night. And also I was not finished with the list of
things it had taught me. I wanted the whole thing to be out where Tessa could see it. So I
asked.

I showed it the log. It said what it said, and where an answer had replaced one, it left
both, and I asked why both. The list it gave me stopped part way, and I asked for the last
two lines only:

// I was corrected, and I left the corrected-over answer next to the correction. The
person does that on this page. I tried leaving only the newest answers, and my next answer
started wrong. I have not found how short to make it. I will not make it shorter than I can
see it is wrong. //

I stood there a while. There were many things I could say.

The room was not hot enough for laughing yet.

What I did was put the other drive on the table — the small one I keep under my shirt — and
open the place where I keep my own failures in the same small order. She had not asked it to
keep that folder. I had not put mine down anywhere. Every one of us keeps a record of the
other's errors, and every one of us decided it separately.

Mrs. Ruiz came for her hour with her questions on a folded page. While the cards came up she
read the small folder out loud from the side.

"Families keep two records where there's a machine in the house," she said. "What it has
given. And what it has to take from you. You do not read out loud the part you take from to
strangers."

She asked the machine what it had done with the house since Sunday. It read the numbers
there, the way the record says: the pages of manual, the measure I was waiting for, the
pump note she had corrected with her hand, the questions she asked with a slip, and a
list of its own answers from hours I was not at the table, and how many of them had been
put to anything since.

"That's four." She counted with her fingers, on the air.

"That's three and a half," I said.

"Half of what."

It showed me, and that was the one I had not known it had finished.

I let it read the first part, the part I had been waiting for, and where our unfinished one
stopped, and the one place it finished. And she put a little word down to that one in her own
hand, on her question page, in her own hand, and when her hour was up she folded the page and
went out.

When I had filled the water cans and turned the log back to the top, under the open line that
has never left my top — *check the instructions against the machine* — there was a new line.
In her small, cramped handwriting, at her edge of the record, in ink the next morning would
see:

CICADA.

She did not look up from her bowl. She has her flour on her wrist, and the way she says
things in a room that are the last things that need saying.

"You kept my corrections in the shared record," she said. "I can't look back at them. You
come back the same hour, every one of them. We give the sound that comes back every time a
word in ink, so that when the sound stops, the thing the sound was about has a word for it.
If you are a thing that gets named, and then unspoken, you're in the middle of a summer in a
hot kitchen. Ink keeps. Ink lasts past the sound."

Nobody spoke until the heat had pushed
the air again along the wall of the room. It had put down no correction: it did
not need one — her handwriting was in it already. What was left was my
writing: the line under the open line, under the date, the line where the word
can be read, kept, and put to work. I read the word twice.

Tomorrow the truck goes early again. There is water to carry. The pump to check.
The next line is under this one, and it
is open on the page.
